Changing Arctic snow cover: A review of recent developments and assessment of future needs for observations, modelling, and impacts

چکیده
Snow is a critically important and rapidly changing feature of the Arctic. However, snow-cover and snowpack conditions change through time pose challenges for measuring and prediction of snow. Plausible scenarios of how Arctic snow cover will respond to changing Arctic climate are important for impact assessments and adaptation strategies. Although much progress has been made in understanding and predicting snow-cover changes and their multiple consequences, many uncertainties remain. In this paper, we review advances in snow monitoring and modelling, and the impact of snow changes on ecosystems and society in Arctic regions. Interdisciplinary activities are required to resolve the current limitations on measuring and modelling snow characteristics through the cold season and at different spatial scales to assure human well-being, economic stability, and improve the ability to predict manage and adapt to natural hazards in the Arctic region.

Investigation of snow cover changes affected by climate change In North West of Iran
In this study in order to monitor snow cover, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) optical images were used, while for detection of snow covered areas, the snow index-NDSI, was applied. The results showed - according to the climatic conditions of the region- during the following months: December, January, February and March, most of the area is covered by snow and the max...

Energy has always been of particular importance to humanity. Oil and gas have been some of the energies that greatly influenced the national security of countries, which produce and consume energy. With the transformation of geostrategic discourse into geo-economic discourse in recent decades and the key role of economics in global relations, oil as the basis of modern industry has enjoyed a hi...
متن کاملForcing of the Arctic Oscillation by Eurasian snow cover
1 Throughout much of the latter half of the 20th century, the dominant mode of North2 ern Hemisphere (NH) extratropical wintertime circulation variability−the Arctic Oscillation 3 (AO)−exhibited a positive trend, with decreasing high-latitude sea-level pressure (SLP) and 4 increasing mid-latitude SLP. General circulation models (GCMs) show this trend is related 5 to several factors, including N...
متن کاملThe combined influences of autumnal snow and sea ice on Northern Hemisphere winters
Past studies have demonstrated a significant relationship between the phase and amplitude of the Northern Annular Mode (NAM) and both Arctic sea ice and high-latitude snow cover during boreal autumn. However, those studies have considered these forcings separately. Here we consider the collective effect of Arctic sea ice and snow cover variability for producing skillful subseasonal forecasts fo...
متن کاملProjected changes in atmospheric heating due to changes in fire disturbance and the snow season in the western Arctic, 2003–2100
[1] In high latitudes, changes in climate impact fire regimes and snow cover duration, altering the surface albedo and the heating of the regional atmosphere. In the western Arctic, under four scenarios of future climate change and future fire regimes (2003–2100), we examined changes in surface albedo and the related changes in regional atmospheric heating due to: (1) vegetation changes followi...
